A picture is worth a thousand words

People say that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” What does that actually mean? Do we know where this expression comes from?
One of the earliest references to this expression is from a 1911 newspaper article. Arthur Brisbane, a newspaper editor, wrote “Use a picture. It’s worth a thousand words.”
In 1913, a similar phrase, “One look is worth a thousand words”, appeared in a newspaper advertisement in the city of Piqua, Ohio. But, ironically, the ad used only words, not images.
A later ad appeared in 1927 presenting the phrase “One picture is worth ten thousand words.” Erroneously, the ad credited the phrase with a Chinese proverb, so people would take it more seriously. As a result, many people believe the expression was created by the Chinese philosopher Confucius.
No matter where the phrase comes from, the next time you share or receive a good picture, look closely. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece to convey one thousand words, or even more.
