[tex]4x^2-4x-49=0\ \to\ a=4,\ b=-4,\ c=-49[/tex]

[tex]x=\dfrac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}=\dfrac{-(-4)\pm\sqrt{(-4)^2-4(4)(-49)}}{2(4)}=[/tex]

[tex]\dfrac{4\pm\sqrt{800}}{8}=\dfrac{4\pm20\sqrt{2}}{8}=\dfrac{1\pm5\sqrt{2}}{2}[/tex]
